Understanding Class 1 Div 1 Lighting

In industrial environments classified as Class 1 Division 1 by the NEC, flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are present in sufficient quantities to create an explosive or ignitable atmosphere. These hazardous locations require specialized lighting solutions that are designed to contain any internal sparks or heat, preventing them from igniting the surrounding atmosphere. The Importance of Class 1 Division 1 LED Lighting

Upgrading to LED technology for your Class 1 Div 1 lighting offers several benefits:

  • Enhanced Safety: Class 1 Division 1 LED lighting fixtures are designed with explosion-proof enclosures and sealed components, minimizing the risk of ignition in hazardous environments.
  • Energy Efficiency: LED lights consume less energy than traditional lighting options, resulting in lower operating costs and reduced heat generation, further enhancing safety.
  • Longer Lifespan: With an extended operational life, Class 1 Div 1 LED lighting requires fewer replacements, minimizing maintenance and reducing the need for personnel to enter hazardous areas.
  • Improved Visibility: Class 1 Division 1 light fixtures with LED technology provide bright, uniform illumination, enhancing visibility and safety for workers in demanding environments.
  • Durability: Constructed with rugged materials and designed to withstand harsh conditions, Class 1 Div 1 lighting fixtures offer reliable performance in challenging industrial settings.

Applications for Class 1 Div 1 Light Fixtures

Class 1 Division 1 lighting is essential in various industries and applications, including:

  • Oil and Gas: Offshore platforms, refineries, and processing plants where flammable gases or vapors are regularly present.
  • Chemical Processing: Facilities handling volatile substances and flammable solvents.
  • Paint and Coating Operations: Spray booths and mixing areas where ignitable concentrations of flammable liquids or vapors are used.
  • Grain and Dust Handling: Silos, elevators, and processing areas where combustible dust may be present in the air.
  • Wastewater Treatment: Pumping stations and digesters where methane and other flammable gases can accumulate.

Selecting the Appropriate Class 1 Div 1 Lighting

When choosing Class 1 Division 1 light fixtures for your facility, consider the following factors:

  • NEC Compliance: Ensure that the fixtures are certified and labeled for use in Class 1 Division 1 hazardous locations as per NEC requirements.
  • Explosion-Proof Rating: Verify that the fixtures have the appropriate explosion-proof rating for your specific hazardous environment, such as gas groups and temperature codes.
  • Lumen Output: Select Class 1 Div 1 light fixtures with sufficient lumen output to provide the necessary illumination levels for your application.
  • Mounting Options: Consider the available mounting configurations, such as pendant, surface, or portable, to suit your facility’s layout and requirements.
  • Maintenance Requirements: Opt for Class 1 Div 1 lighting fixtures that are easy to maintain and have readily available replacement parts to minimize downtime during repair or maintenance operations.

FAQs About Class 1 Division 1 Lighting Fixtures

Class 1 Division 1 lighting fixtures are lighting fixtures used in hazardous work environments where the presence of flammable gases and vapors or combustible dust is possible. These fixtures are certified by the local and national authorities, and they must meet certain standards to be classified as Class 1 Division 1 fixtures.

FAQs About Class 1 Division 1 Lighting Fixtures

Q1: What types of hazardous locations are suitable for Class 1 Division 1 fixtures?
A1: Class 1 Division 1 fixtures are suitable for hazardous locations where the following conditions could potentially occur: Read more about What is Class 1 Division 1 LED Lighting? here.

• Combustible dust or fibers that could create a fire or explosion risk;
• Flammable or combustible gases and vapors that are present in the air;
• Ignitable fibers and flyings that could create a fire or explosion risk;
• Liquid-based combustibles, such as fuel, oil, or paint; and
• Combustible fibers and flyings from storage, handling, or processing operations.

Q2: What are the requirements for Class 1 Division 1 lighting fixtures?
A2: Class 1 Division 1 fixtures must meet certain standards to be certified by local and national authorities. These standards include:

• The fixture must be constructed of approved materials that won’t add to the risk of ignition;
• The fixture must be able to withstand a minimum of 20kA (kiloamperes) of short-circuit current;
• The fixture must remain covered and shielded to prevent accidental contact with live parts;
• The fixture must be able to withstand temperatures up to 105°C (221°F);
• The fixture must provide sufficient protection against dust and water intrusion

Q3: What is class 1 division 1 lighting?
A3: A heavy-duty luminaire surrounds the spark-producing components so that if vapors or gas leak in, and are ignited, the explosion is contained

Class 1 – Hazardous locations or areas where flammable gases or vapors are/could become present in concentrations suitable to produce explosive and/or ignitable mixtures. Class 1 locations are further divided into 2 divisions:

Class 1 Div 1: Three different situations could exist to classify an area as a Class 1 Division 1 location.

  1. When the atmosphere of an area or location is expected to contain explosive mixtures of gases, vapors, or liquids during normal working operations. (This is the most common C1, Div 1)
  2. An area where ignitable concentrations frequently exist because of repair or maintenance operations.
  3. The release of ignitable concentrations of gases or vapors due to equipment breakdown, while at the same time causing electrical equipment failure.
