Things To Know About Marine Navigation LightsMarine navigation lights are an essential part of the marine industry. These lights are used to help vessels identify their position and course when navigating in and around ports, docks, and platforms. Navigation lights are generally divided into two categories: stern lights and sidelights. Stern lights are used to indicate the direction of a vessel’s travel. These lights are typically red on the port side and green on the starboard side. Sidelights are used to identify the size and type of a vessel. These lights are typically white and placed on the bow (front) and stern (back) of the vessel. In order to operate safely in and around ports, docks, and platforms, vessels must adhere to certain regulations and standards regarding the use of navigation lights. For example, the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) requires that all vessels less than 50 meters in length must display lights between sunset and sunrise. For vessels of greater than 50 meters in length, the lights must be displayed at all times in restricted visibility. Additionally, all vessels must display their navigation lights according to their size and type. For example, vessels less than 7 meters in length must display a sternlight and sidelight at the same level and must show the sternlight in a continuous arc of 22.5 degrees between the sidelights. Vessels 7 meters or more in length must display two masthead lights, a stern light, and two sidelights. Most ports, docks, and platforms also have their own regulations governing the use of navigation lights. It is important for vessels to be aware of and adhere to these regulations when navigating in these areas. |
