Lighting is important in any setting: For residential use, lighting should illuminate as well as be decorative. In commercial and industrial use, lighting should be one of the features that create a safe working environment for employees and visitors/customers.

Choosing residential lighting is a far easier job because it is usually guided by personal preferences, while commercial and industrial lighting has to be a more considered choice. Factors involved are the size of the area to be lit, type – fluorescent, halogen, or LED, running costs, environmental considerations, and safety aspects.

The environment may lend itself to certain types of lighting such as a place where hazardous materials are handled. In such an environment, there is always a risk of vapors, fumes and gasses, and combustible dust and there is only one solution and that is explosion-proof lighting

Uses of Explosion proof Lighting LED

What is explosion proof lighting?

These are not light fixtures that are resistant to an explosion, instead, they are lights that can contain any sparks that could ignite any flammable and explosive gasses in the atmosphere.

Typically, these light fittings are encased in a thick, robust frame made from the sturdiest steel or aluminum. The lenses also have to be extremely durable to ensure they can withstand harsh working conditions. Lenses should also be as crack-resistant as possible to prevent leaks.

To be considered explosion proof, there are two requirements a light must meet:

It must be able to withstand an internal explosion

It must be able to prevent the spread of any internal explosion to the atmosphere.

To achieve these conditions, special joints and closures are built into the fixture, unlike a conventional light where the bulb, wiring, contacts, and switches are exposed to the atmosphere. Even if the lighting fixture becomes damaged, the explosion or other potential sources of ignition are contained and do not reach the atmosphere.

What type of facility should use LED explosion proof lighting?

They include:

Essentially, any high humidity, high temperature, or dusty location could be a candidate for hazardous location lighting fixtures.

Advantages of explosion proof lighting

Other than the obvious benefits of its function, there are advantages explosion proof lighting has over conventional solutions.

High durability: because they are built with sturdier and heavier materials they can withstand harsh environments. Maintenance and replenishment costs are therefore lower than standard lighting.

Greater mobility: the low risk of damage makes them much more portable than standard lights.

Greater efficiency: LED explosion proof high bay lighting uses approximately 90 percent less energy than a standard lighting fixture. They also have much longer lifespans, being able to last up to 100,000 hours.

Lower heat emissions: the features that prevent explosions and sparks also mean the heat is retained and managed internally in the housing.

Eco-friendly: explosion proof lights do not contain toxic substances that are harmful to the environment such as lead and mercury.
